The boy in the bed next to mine was crying that he wanted to go home. His mother told Uncle Brad that they had been here for four days already and she feared that they were both suffering from cabin fever.

Right now she was lying in bed next to him without touching him and retelling him the story that she read to him all day.

It must be difficult to have a child that you can't touch. After a nurse left he would complain loudly to his mother that the nurse touched him to take his pulse or ruffled his hair.

His mother told him that she understood. She seemed to have it down pat how close she could get to him without crossing the invisible border.

Sometimes he reached out and touched her. Each time she had looked surprised. It was clear that she hadn't expected it because it wasn't normal for him to do that.

When the dad, brother and sister came to visit it was a whole different story. The mother wrapped her arms around her daughter and brushed her hair. It was almost like she was making up for not being able to touch her other child.

The oldest brother picked on him a little and tried to get him mad it worked too. He was sore for attention. I'd bet he was jealous.

The dad was talking to him about soccer and what games they would watch together when he came home. He told him which players were hurt and couldn't play. They talked like best pals and not father and son. The little girl sat on her father's lap and laid her head against his chest while the mother took the chance to shower and quickly return to her son's side.

I felt that she was like a mother should be. I felt a twinge of pain. Why hadn't my mother been like that? I wasn't even as trying as her son was. Had I been too good?

It was hard to see the dad and kids leave. I had a feeling that they functioned best when they were all together. That was when the son had reached to his mother. His actions were his way of thanking her for staying with him.

That was the moment that I decided that I wanted to work in family court, like the one who had given me to Uncle Brad. I wanted to help families. I felt that I had a good grasp on the different kinds of families that there were.

It was something that I could do to give back. I had been helped when I needed it and now my life was pretty great, even if I was lying in a hospital bed sick as a dog.

I looked over at Uncle Brad. He was asleep nearby. I owed him big for this. This was above and beyond the call of duty. They had clearly told him that he could leave and he had wanted to stay.

I had a feeling that he was glad that I had begged him to stay.
